What is poverty? When people are unable to meet their everyday needs for food, water,

clothing and shelter, they are living in poverty. Education, healthcare,

sanitary toilets, electricity, technology and savings are beyond the reach

of these families.

Living in poverty affects much more than just money and possessions.

Poverty prevents people from participating fully in their society and culture. It deprives them of choices

and opportunities. Everyday enjoyment, creativity and recreation are replaced by worry, fear and stress.

How does poverty affect me in New Zealand? It can affect other people and it can affect you because you don’t get other money.

What are some interesting statistics about poverty? Nearly 22,000 children die each day due to living in poverty.

There are 2.2 billion children in the world, and 1 billion of them live in poverty.

A third of all poor in developing countries are children aged zero to 12

Where do people experiencing the most extreme poverty live? Sub-saharan Africa.

What factors contribute to poverty? Lack of good jobs/job growth

Lack of good education. The second root cause of poverty is a lack of education

 Warfare/conflict

 Weather/climate change

          Social injustice

 Lack of food and water

 Lack of infrastructure

 Lack of government support

What can I do to help poverty? I can save up my money and when I get 100 dollars then I will give it to them.

Did you know, this week is New Zealand Sign Language Week (NZSL)!

We have been learning to say “hi nice to meet you, my name is” and spelling our names!

Check out my video of me saying this in sign language. Can you do this too? It would be great to see you learn from my video and post your own blog about NZSL!

The day at war.

In writing we did The day at war and it was so fun I did it on google docs. Dear family,

Hi Mum and Dad and Family,

How are you doing at home? I am a dog handler. Me and the dog have been going around and we have seen people fallen down the cliff hurt and the dog ran to the kid. That means they need more help. It was a kid but we saw other people down at the bottom of the cliff too. I am teaching my new dog after the run because it needs more teaching. We are in NZ now and then we will be coming back home. So see you guys soon.

How is Rosie and Michael doing at home? Do they miss me? I am missing home and the dog and the family the most. Did Rosie move on to a new level at swimming and did Michael go to where I was when I was swimming. I like that you and Mum are Okay.

I am so happy that I won the battle. I saw Ducks and you know that I am scared of ducks.
